Trivial Pursuits

The other day Deepa and I were discussing how some people who we know, mindlessly pursue what the Raos or the Reddys are doing. Not knowing what it is they really seek, or what they really want in their lives. Herd mentality basically.

Deepa was telling me how one of her colleagues at her office who’d recently moved to Hyderabad, felt that : “Yaha pe kuch nahin hain”.

The conversation went a bit like this :

Colleague : Ha, Hyderabad theek hai, par yaha pe kuch nahin hain.
Deepa : Kuch nahin hain matlab ?……..

Colleague : Nahin, matlab yaha pe karne ke liye kuch nahin hai.
Deepa : Magar apko karna kya hai ?……..

Colleague : Nahin, matlab bangalore aur Bombay mein pubs aur discos vagera hain na…
Deepa : Vo sab tho idhar bhi hain ?

Colleague : ha voh, tho hain, par magar vaise karne ke liye kuch nahin hain…..
Deepa : Karne ke liye matlab kya ?

( Colleague by now pretty unsure of what it is he really wants. )

Colleague : Nahin, what I mean is I miss my friends and the people.
Deepa : You can make new friends here as well, and people are everywhere…….

Do you know anyone with whom you’ve had a similar conversation ?
